A letter from the Fleming Family - September, 2024
Our father Alan would be so thrilled at how the tournament at Seabrook has grown and flourished. He loved the competition but more importantly he lived for the social side of tournaments and the opportunity to catch up with old friends. Dad so enjoyed hanging out with friends at the Seabrook Tennis Center.
Tennis was Alan's life and he lived and breathed it every day. Catching the tennis bug early by age 8 he belonged to a tennis club and from then on enjoyed playing with friends, at club events and in regional tournaments. Even during WWII he tried to practice on the deck of his LST in the Pacific. What was never surprising was to hear Dad had hopped an early train out of New York City and was playing by 4:30pm at the Racquets Club in Short Hills NJ.
Tennis was a family affair. Early on as kids we grew up playing in piles of top dressing while Dad played one match or another. Family vacations were based around a tournament and of course playing tennis. For years Dad and Tom Kent (fellow Seabrook resident) played in the Bermuda tournament (leaving us kids behind). Every summer we made annual treks to various professional tournaments in the New Jersey/New York area such as Orange Lawn, Forest Hills, and later the US Open. Dad knew everyone.
The tournament at Seabrook embodies Dad’s vision of having fun. Our family is proud and happy to see Dad’s memory living on with the Alan Fleming tournament at Seabrook. We wish you all much happiness and cheer!
Thanks
